The Wu-Tang Clan has its Killa Beez, its own (recently revived) line of vegan merch; the Clan also has its BFF status with Bill Murray, and they’ll forever have serious Ghost Dog cred, but now, the crew finally has its own pizza, and it ain’t nuthing ta F with. Because like many members of the iconic rap group, it’s vegan.
Named “Cashews Rule Everything Around Me”, the pie is only available at a Detroit pizza shop named Pie-Sci. The pizza parlor said it came up with the idea for the pie in honor of Wu Tang Clan’s upcoming performance at a local electronic music festival. The group will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of their first major label release, “Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)”, at the Movement Festival taking place over Memorial Day weekend.
Cashews Rule Everything Around Me is a play on the album’s iconic hit single “C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me).” Detroit News reports that the vegan pie will come with chimichurri sauce, mushrooms, lemon asparagus, house-made cashew cheese, and strawberry-rhubarb-mint drizzle. Not exactly greasy Staten Island slice style, but sure to be a hit among fans.
Whether made in honor of the “Clan in da Front” or not, vegan pizza is in high demand across the globe. Australia has recently seen both major pizza chains Domino’s and Pizza Hut add vegan options to their menus. Domino’s also added vegan cheese to its pizzas in the Netherlands and Belgium. And the UK is loaded with vegan pizza shops and pies. In the U.S., while the three major chains aren’t currently offering vegan cheese for their pizzas, a number of local pie shops, like Pie-Sci, are. In Los Angeles there are dozens of vegan options across the city, and New York is seeing its fair share of vegan pizza shops, slices, and whole pies. Brooklyn slice shop Paulie Gee’s just announced that it will be offering a vegan slice menu at its new spot.
RZA, the founder of the Wu Tang Clan, has been an outspoken voice for compassion and animal rights. He recently lent his voice to a PSA for animal equality. And most recently, Ghostface Killah showed up to try the new vegan Impossible Burger sliders at White Castle.
You will need a few dollar-dollar-bills-y’all to get a slice of the C.R.E.A.M. as the limited-edition pizzas will set you back $9 for a small and $15 for a large. Get them before they’re gone, like Ol’ Dirt (RIP).
