Vegan pork has officially hit Aldi store shelves in China.
Green Monday-founded food-tech brand Right Treat created the plant-based meat, called OmniPork. The Hong Kong-based company has now been rebranded to OmniFoods.
The company first launched the plant-based pork alternative two years ago. It has a texture similar to that of real meat. It cooks just like it, too.
OmniPork is made from shiitake mushrooms, pea protein, soy protein, and rice protein. In addition to being packed with protein, it’s a healthier alternative to traditional pork. The plant-based meat contains zero cholesterol and has 86 percent less saturated fat than uncooked lean ground pork.
Now, Aldi China shoppers can get their hands on the nutritious, vegan meat in Shanghai.
“[W]e are honored for OmniPork to partner with ALDI China to launch five brand new convenient meals in all their locations in Shanghai,” David Yeung, founder of Green Monday, wrote on Instagram.
He continued: “We look forward to an impactful and wholesome long-term partnership!”
OmniPork first launched in Green Common, a vegan grocery store chain, in 2018. It has since become available in a number of Hong Kong restaurants, including the Four Seasons Hotel and the Grand Hyatt. It also launched in Taco Bell China last year.
In May, Green Monday announced the release of two new products. Omnipork Strip is a vegan version of pork shoulder. And Omnipork Luncheon Meat is a plant-based luncheon meat that resembles SPAM.
Ming Court, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Hong Kong, offers the two new OmniPork products. They have also launched at the Green Monday-owned vegan restaurant chain Kind Kitchen and in the retail market.
The demand for plant-based foods has been increasing in China. In Hong Kong, a Green Monday survey revealed nearly a quarter of the population is limiting their meat intake by following a flexitarian diet.
Yeung told LIVEKINDLY that the launch of OmniPork’s Luncheon Meat will “go a long way” to increase flexitarian eating habits.
“In the two years since OmniPork made its debut, it is evident that we have catalyzed massive behavior shift in many parts of Asia,” he said.
