My Goodness!, WellKit Foods International Ltd’s flagship non-dairy persimmon ice cream product, is set to “revolutionize” the dairy-free ice cream market.
The New Zealand-based nutritional foods company’s fruit-based dessert is different from many other vegan ice cream options. The ice cream is free of soy, almond, and coconut but it’s not a typical sorbet.
Most sorbets tend to contain a small percentage of fruit, Duane Wells, WellKit director, said to the Dairy Reporter. However, My Goodness! “uses a significantly higher proportion of fresh fruit,” Wells continued, “around 60 percent.”
NTL Horticulture, the Wells family’s Northland New Zealand-based company, has grown and packed persimmons for export since 1981, noted the Dairy Reporter. Lindsey Wells, the company’s founder, has worked with the Massey University Food Technology department since 2012. The partnership was created “to develop a shelf-stable persimmon pulp” for low-grade persimmons.
“Almost by mistake—or luck—Massey University food technology students put the pulp through a process that resulted in the first prototype of the non-dairy ice-cream,” Wells added.
The unique process allows My Goodness! to mimic the taste and feel of traditional dairy-based premium ice cream.
The non-dairy ice cream is sold in 470ml tubs and comes in four flavors: Mango Swirl, Summer Berry Swirl, Passionfruit Swirl, and Kiwifruit Swirl. The brand hopes to soon export its product to Asian countries and is already receiving interest from Japan and Indonesia.
Vegan ice cream of all kinds is trending, which bodes well for this unique product.
Many popular brands, such as Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dazs, have recently launched vegan ice cream lines.
Ben & Jerry’s vegan ice cream is formulated with almond milk. So far, the brand’s vegan line contains nine unique pints. Häagen-Dazs’ vegan ice cream blends are made with coconut cream. The line contains six different pints and two dessert bars.
Even Target’s Archer Farms brand recently released a vegan ice cream line. The brand aims to provide more healthy and convenient options, Cooking Light reported. Currently, the Archer Farms vegan ice cream line offers seven flavors: Cashew Caramel, Caramel Brownie, Mocha Almond Fudge, Peanut Butter & Chocolate, Vanilla Bean, Vanilla Cake & Cookie Dough, and Strawberry & Fudge.
