UK supermarket chain ASDA is selling vegan hot cross buns made with currants and orange peel just in time for the Easter season.
The four-pack is part of ASDA’s Baker’s Selection Range and costs just £2.
This isn’t the first time the affordable supermarket has offered vegan hot cross buns – last year, ASDA launched gluten-free and vegan hot cross buns under its Free From range. “Hot cross buns are Easter essentials, and with even more set to be eaten this year, we want to make sure we have a bun that tickles everyone’s taste buds,” said ASDA product developer Sonia Collins at the time.
Where can you find vegan Easter sweets in the UK? According to Instagram account @nowyouknowitsvegan, ASDA isn’t the only retailer carrying egg and dairy-free hot cross buns – leading supermarket chain Tesco is as well.
Other chains are getting ready for the holiday with traditional chocolate eggs. Aldi launched vegan chocolate eggs with Ferrero Rocher-style truffles by German chocolatier Moser-Roth. It also carries a trio of vegan Easter eggs available in dark chocolate, white chocolate, and chocolate raspberry.
Sainsbury’s has vegan white chocolate strawberry eggs flecked with real fruit pieces. Several chains, such as Aldi, Tesco, ASDA, Waitrose, M&S, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s carry organic dairy-free milk chocolate eggs by Moo Free. Waitrose is also stocking gelatin-free avocado gummy candy for the holiday.
While Cadbury does not offer a dairy-free version of its iconic Creme Egg, Yorkshire-based independent business Mummy Meagz – The Indulgent Vegan Kitchen makes one that’s free from animal ingredients. It’s also about twice the size of the classic Easter treat. Instead of dairy, the creamy filling is made from cocoa butter.
The increased availability of vegan Easter treats is a sign of the times – more Brits are taking a flexitarian approach to their diets and making a conscious effort to eat fewer animal products. Last year, vegan product launches increased 200 percent in the UK, more than any other nation, according to data from market research firm Mintel.
ASDA’s vegan hot cross buns are available in-store.
