These Vegan Hemp Chocolate Bars Are Packed With Plant Protein

What if your daily chocolate not only tasted good but was also good for you? Made from antioxidant-rich cacao, chocolate bars arguably should be a healthy treat. Sounds too good to be true, right?

While not every chocolate bar is healthy, chocolate can be a healthy treat. That’s why certified health coach Nancy Kaye founded vegan chocolate bar brand Hemp Love.

Kaye tells LIVEKINDLY that being “excessively fond of chocolate,” she wanted to “create a more nutritious and healthier chocolate experience.

High in protein and rich in vitamins, hemp seeds are one of nature’s superfoods. A 2005 study found that hemp seeds may help reduce the risk of heart disease because they contain arginine, an amino acid that produces nitric oxide in the body. This helps blood vessels relax, which can have a long term positive effect on heart health.

Kaye launched Hemp Love in January 2019, “inspired by my everyday health and wellness choices. It was also important to me that my brand is organic, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free.”

Organic hemp seeds were the solution. In addition to this, “it was also important to me that my brand is organic, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free.”

Kaye wanted to make her chocolate something that would “inspire people to make healthier choices.” So, the bars had to taste good, too.

Hemp Love offers six vegan chocolate bar flavors.

‘Perfectly Balanced’

Kaye takes pride not only in having a better-for-you chocolate bar, but also one that her customers love.

Each Hemp Love chocolate bar features organic hemp seeds and ethically sourced Ecuadorian and South American cacao. The brand offers six flavors: Mint, Cinnamon Salt, Lavender Salt, Orange/Vanilla, Peanut Butter, and Dark Chocolate. The flavors Mint, Orange/Vanilla, and Peanut Butter contain more than five grams of protein each.

“Our flavors are perfectly balanced. The hemp seeds give our chocolate bar a wonderful texture while adding a delicious crunch,” says Kaye.

“Customers have told us that Hemp Love is the best tasting vegan chocolate bar they have ever had,” she adds. “They love our flavors and that added textual crunch.”

Hemp seeds aren’t just good for your heart; more than 25 percent of hemp seeds’ calories come from high-quality plant-based protein. “I love that hemp seeds are also a plant-based complete protein,” adds Kaye.

These tiny seeds are a good source of vitamins and minerals, including phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc. They are also rich in two essential fatty acids—linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3)—which are both crucial to healthy brain function.

In a chocolate bar, Kaye says the seeds have “a little bit of a nutty flavor, nice consistency and they taste good, too.”

Each Hemp Love bar is made with organic hemp seeds.

Cacao is also a superfood. It’s rich in polyphenols, an antioxidant found in foods like fruit, chocolate, and wine. A 2017 study found that polyphenols can reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and improve cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Like hemp seeds, cacao might also be good for your heart. It’s also abundant in flavanols, which help relax the arteries. Cacao has the most flavanols per weight of any food.

“Hemp Love was created as I researched ways to experience health in a fresh new way, while making a chocolate bar that is both nourishing and tasty,” says Kaye. “So that we can indulge and enjoy without regrets.”
