Vegan celebrity entrepreneur, Kat Von D, who just got married to the Prayers lead singer Leafar Seyer, is taking a stance against the unsolicited advice the couple received about her pregnancy. In an Instagram post today, Von D made the unapologetic announcement that she will have her baby at home with the assistance of a midwife, not at the hospital under the care of a doctor.
Von D is not afraid of attention – her vegan cosmetics line, Kat Von D Beauty, is known for its bold pigments and eye-catching style. Her multiple tattoos have also been known to turn heads, and there is no ignoring her heaven-and-hell-themed wedding as she walked down the aisle in a fire engine red gown, complete with devil horns in her hair. However, Von D’s comfort expressing herself in the public eye does not shield her from the droves of criticism and mean comments on social media.
In the caption announcing her pregnancy plans, she wrote, “If you don’t know what it’s like have people around you think you are ridiculous, try being openly vegan. And, if you don’t know what it’s like to have the entire world openly criticize, judge, throw uninformed opinions, and curse you – try being an openly pregnant vegan on Instagram, having a natural, drug-free home birth in water with a midwife and doula, who has the intention of raising a vegan child, without vaccinations. My point being: I already know what it’s like to make life choices that are not the same as the majority. So your negative comments are not going influence my choices.”
Von D noted that she had braced herself for the backlash regarding this unorthodox decision. She said that even her own father “flipped out” when she told him they “decided to ditch the doctor and go with a midwife.” However, in typical Von D style, she intends to stay firm in her beliefs. She has done her research and educated herself, and she remains resolute in her decision.
“This is my body. This is our child. And this is our pregnancy journey,” she stated.
To further address the unavoidable commentary, Von D continued, “Feel free to follow me on here if you like what I’m about – whether it’s tattooing, lipstick, Animal Rights, sobriety, feminism, ridiculous gothiness, black flower gardening, cats, or my adorable husband. But if you don’t dig a certain something about what I post, i kindly ask that you press the unfollow button and move the fuck on. So before anyone of you feel inspired to tell me how to do this, I would appreciate you keeping your unsolicited criticism to yourself.”
Back in May, the couple announced their pregnancy, exclaiming, “It’s a boy!” in another public Instagram post. The couple also confirmed that they will be raising their child vegan.
