With the help of technology, it’s easier than ever to go (and stay) vegan. There’s an app for just about everything and veganism is no exception.
Whether you’re looking to eat more plant-based food, looking for vegan beauty, or trying to eliminate animal products altogether, there’s an app for that. The ease of use and accessibility of the app makes it so that many of the shopping difficulties of veganism all but non-existent.
Some of these apps can be used to scan barcodes while you shop, letting you know what is and isn’t vegan. Others are directories of companies and brands that you can trust to keep you from giving money to companies that, among many things, test on animals.
All apps, unless specifically mentioned otherwise, are available on Android and iOS.
7 Apps That Make Vegan Life Easier Than Ever Before
1. Is It Vegan?
Have you ever been unsure of an ingredient? Is It Vegan? is not only a lifesaver, it’s also very easy to use. You simply open it up, scan the barcode of whatever products you’re interested in, and it will tell you whether the product is vegan, vegetarian, or neither.
2. Vegan Pocket
Vegan Pocket works like Is It Vegan?, except it also includes cruelty-free and vegan beauty products. It works the same way – just scan a product and it’ll tell you if it contains animal products. This app is only available on iOS.
3. Cruelty-Free
The Cruelty-Free app tells you if a product was tested on animals – it’s also regularly updated with new products. Users can scan products, see brand logos and descriptions to match in-store, shop using direct links to brand websites, and create a shopping list of their favorite brands.
4. HappyCow
HappyCow is a handy app that helps diners find vegan, vegetarian, and vegan-friendly places to eat while out or traveling. It covers over 180+ countries, making sure you’ll have somewhere to eat vegan wherever you are. HappyCow costs $3.99 and is only available on iOS. It is also available for free through the website.
5. Vanilla Bean
Vanilla Bean is similar to HappyCow, except it focuses on England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. It also includes some cities in Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland as well as LA and NYC in the US. So if you’re visiting any of this places, this app will be perfect for finding vegan-friendly restaurants while you’re out.
6. Bunny Free
Here’s another app that allows you to scan barcodes. What makes Bunny Free a little different from the rest is that it allows you to search specific brands and/or browse a large list, then tells you if the company is vegan, working for regulatory change, or testing on animals. You might be surprised at some of the companies that aren’t so cruelty-free.
7. AirVegan
A must-have for frequent fliers. AirVegan tells you which airports have plant-based dining options and how many based on a color rating system. Green means many, yellow means a few, and red means extremely limited options – so it might be best to pack your own vegan snacks.
