Trader Joe’s has vegan sandwich cookies inspired by Neapolitan ice cream — just FYI.
The affordable grocery store chain’s vegan options has a strong fan following online. Joe-Joe’s — Trader Joe’s take on Oreos –, which are usually vegan by default, are one of the most popular products. Like Oreos, there are always new Joe-Joe’s inspired by seasonal flavors: pumpkin spice in fall, peppermint in winter, and in summer (the weather seems to have forgotten about spring — thanks, climate change), ice cream.
According to the Instagram @traderjoesvegan, the vegan cookies have been kicking around since last July. Like the ice cream, the Neapolitan Joe-Joe’s combine chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry.
“The dark brown wafer is cocoa-flavored, while the golden wafer tastes like vanilla,” says Trader Joe’s. “Between the wafers is a layer of strawberry-flavored creme that includes flecks of freeze-dried strawberries. Each bite delivers the crunchy, creamy taste of all three flavors—unless, of course, you choose to deconstruct the cookie and enjoy each flavor one-by-one!”
It’s not the first vegan-friendly item from Trader Joe’s own brand to draw inspiration from Neapolitan ice cream. The grocery store chain introduced Neapolitan Puffs Cereal made from a blend legume flours earlier this year. “They’re sweetened with cane sugar and, flavored with real cocoa, freeze dried strawberries, natural vanilla flavor, and other natural flavors. The colors are legit, too, derived from natural sources like cocoa, strawberries, and purple carrot juice powder,” Trader Joe’s wrote.
Joe-Joe’s aren’t the only vegan cookie you can find at Trader Joe’s. Under its own brand, you can find vegan sandwich cookies with creme fillings like maple, lemon, chocolate, and vanilla, chocolate cat-shaped cookies, and speculoos cookies. Even its cookie butter is vegan.
Depending on which region you live in, your store might carry clearly labeled vegan cookies sold its privatebrand. under Trader Joe’s You can even find some cookies from other brands, like Lenny & Larry’s, which makes giant cookies packed with plant-based protein.
Trader Joe’s national director of public relations, Kenya Friend-Daniel, told Vegconomist earlier this month that while vegan products aren’t the grocery store’s focus, the constant addition of new items comes as a result of customer requests. According to global research firm Mintel, one-third of Americans are trying to eat more plant-based food.
