(Updated December 15, 2019) | Trader Joe’s is out to help you relive your childhood memories. The affordable grocery store chain has brought back its vegan sugar cookies.
The “Twinkling Trees” Christmas tree-shaped cookies — coated with sparkling green sugar — were initially spotted on the shelves in 2018.
As well as festive cookies, Customers can find an array of vegan holiday food options at Trader Joe’s, including Raspberry Rugelach, Cultured Coconut Milk Nog, and coconut whipped cream.
Trader Joe’s also carries vegan cookie options all year round. It offers soft-baked snickerdoodles similar to the ones made by allergen-friendly brand Enjoy Life and Lenny & Larry’s plant-based protein cookies. Depending on where you live, you might even find bags of vegan chocolate chip cookies or oatmeal cookies.
The chain also offers affordable vegan meat including tempeh, tofu, Tofurky sausages, chicken-less tenders, and soyrizo — a meatless chorizo made from soy protein.
It also offers a range of dairy-free milk options, vegan ready meals, fresh and frozen produce, and dry pantry staples. The grocery store’s vegan products have a devout following on social media, where fans share new product finds and plant-based recipe ideas.
Trader Joe’s isn’t the only affordable supermarket chain catering to demand for more vegan food. Aldi — which has more than 1900 locations across the U.S. — has a wide range of options. Earlier this year, it added several new products — including five new plant-based burgers — to its vegan Earth Grown range.
Demand for vegan food is rising in the U.S.
A study from earlier this year — conducted by market intelligence company Numerator — revealed that 80 percent of Americans want to swap meat for vegan food.
According to Numerator, “Health and curiosity are the primary drivers,” but environmental and ethical concerns are more likely to motivate vegans and vegetarians.
It added, “[consumers] love the taste, perceived healthiness, and the fact that these products don’t involve harming animals and are better for the environment.”
Trader Joe’s vegan Christmas sugar cookies are available in stores while supplies last.
