There’s a new vegan hot sauce in town at Trader Joe’s and it’s made with 50 percent jalapeños.
Trader Joe’s is a favorite of many because of its affordable vegan options sold under its private label brand. The new jalapeño sauce is described as hot, but not “overwhelmingly spicy” with a smooth, creamy texture.
Trader Joe’s recommends drizzling it over enchiladas in place of the traditional sauce, serving it over nachos, or using it to make beef tacos or a carnitas bowl, both of which can be made using vegan Trader Joe’s products. The chain carries beefless crumbles, meat-free chicken strips, and dairy-free cheese.
Trader Joe’s jalapeño hot sauce may be part of a new batch of products for the spring season. The chain recently introduced cultured cashew milk in two flavors — plain and mango — as well as dairy-free canned coconut lattes. It also stocks staples, ranging from vegan meat and milk to plant-based frozen entrees, fruit and vegetables, and snacks.
Many of the grocery store’s new products reflect new trends — for example, it stocks several kinds of riced cauliflower and recently launched watermelon jerky under its private label. A recent study by DuPont Nutrition & Health and HealthFocus International shows that 52 percent of American consumers are buying more plant-based food.
“There is a bright immediate future for this megatrend,” said Greg Paul, marketing leader for the beverage industry at DuPont Nutrition & Health. “There is a seismic shift occurring in eating habits globally, creating a significant market opportunity. Most important, our research reveals that for most consumers, this has moved beyond experimentation into a permanent change brought on by health, lifestyle, and social factors.”
Nearly 60 percent of respondents to DuPont’s study said that they hope to keep the change in their dietary habits permanent, noting that following a more “flexitarian” diet made them feel healthier. Another study, commissioned by dairy-free yogurt brand Kite Hill, found that nearly one-third of American consumers plan to eat more plant-based food to improve their health this year.
Trader Joe’s jalapeño sauce costs $3.49 for a 10-ounce bottle and is available nationwide.
