2017 has already seen some pretty amazing vegan film and documentary releases. We’ve been treated to another hard hitting documentary from the creators of Cowspiracy, What the Health, we’ve all had a good cry at Okja and we were swept away by Simon Amstell’s utopian future in Carnage. But thankfully there’s still plenty more to come in the next year.
We’ve put together a list of the top 5 documentaries you’ve still got to look forward to.
Top 5 Upcoming Vegan Documentaries
Dominion
Dominion is the new documentary, which is directed by Australian Chris Delforce. This documentary follows up to Delforce’s 2014 film, Lucent, which explored animal welfare issues within animal agriculture, specifically Australian pig farming and the slaughterhouse industry. The new film, Dominion, will be released next year and looks at the numerous ways animals are exploited and harmed, by casting focus on pets, wildlife, scientific research, entertainment, obviously food, as well as textiles and clothing.
Eating Animals
Narrated and produced by passionate vegan and famous Hollywood actress Natalie Portman, this film made its debut recently in September, at the 44th festival in Colorado, where it received an impressive standing ovation from the moved audience. As can be gathered by the title, ‘Eating Animals’ is about animals which are farmed for food, in the animal agriculture industry. The film is based off the book written by Jonathan Safran Foer, who aptly also co-wrote the film, alongside director Christopher Dillon Quinn. In an effective, real and rather graphic way, the film explores the honest truth of how food is produced, what really goes into it, and exposes real-life, extensive animal cruelty within agricultural practices.
The Game Changers
Produced by award-winning director James Cameron, The Game Changers is set to be an inspiring watch featuring all kinds of people who not only live but thrive on a plant-based diet. Cameron has become an advocate for a plant-based diet in recent years having adopted the diet himself in order to reduce his carbon footprint. You can expect athletes, soldiers and cultural icons to appear in this feature and the filmmakers are hoping to ‘dispel the myth that you need protein from animals to become a real man.’
The Invisible Vegan
The first documentary of it’s kind, The Invisible Vegan has already premiered in L.A. this month, but they need your help to make mass distribution a reality. The film focuses on the ways in which the African-American community are forgotten within the vegan community and informs the viewer that veganism isn’t just for white people. This groundbreaking documentary highlights the importance of an intersectional approach to veganism that is often forgotten about.
