Fashion giant H&M has teamed up with vegan Spanish professional footballer Héctor Bellerín to launch a sustainable menswear collection.
The collection—Edition by Héctor Bellerín—features 100 percent sustainable materials. These include organic or recycled cotton, recycled nylons and polyesters, and sustainably sourced viscose fibres.
The line features everything from hoodies and sweatshirts to parkas, blazers, and hats. Its tees have positive slogans like “To Protect Our Future Together” and “Live With Purpose.” The t-shirts also feature a graphic of the planet.
H&M will launch Edition by Héctor Bellerín online and in selected stores on February 18.
This isn’t H&M’s first sustainable collection. It teamed up with denim brand Lee to launch a similar eco-friendly line.
The Lee x H&M collection includes 100 percent recycled cotton jeans, which feature non-toxic zippers and buttons. They also feature non-leather backpatches made from cork and jacron paper.
In a press release, H&M revealed it would also share its Life Cycle Assessment data online for the first time. The data includes the water, carbon dioxide, and energy impact of its denim garments.
The collection features pieces for women, men, and children. It will launch online and in select H&M stores on January 28.
The sustainable menswear collection is inspired by Bellerín’s own environmental activism.
In 2020, the footballer—who went vegan in 2016—teamed up with reforestation non-profit One Tree Planted. He pledged to plant 3,000 trees every time his team, the Premier League club Arsenal, won during the months of June and July.
In September, he became the second-largest shareholder of eco-friendly, vegan football club Forest Green Rovers. In 2018, the English soccer team became the world’s first professional sports team that the United Nations certified as carbon-neutral. The club also plays in a sustainable stadium that’s powered by renewable energy.
Bellerín said the new clothing line provides an extension for his environmental advocacy. “Fashion is like activism, and our clothes can spread a positive message to others,” he explained in a statement.
“To protect our planet, it requires change. Change must come from the big corporations as well as individuals,” he wrote on Instagram. “Collaborating with [H&M] on a sustainable collection is the first step of many needed in the right direction. Righting the wrongs of the past to shape for a better future.”
