Subway just added a 100 percent plant-based sandwich to its menu in all Brazil locations.
Dubbed the “Sub Veg,” the new sandwich features soy-based protein, creamy, dairy-free cheddar cheese, veggies, and barbecue sauce inside white Italian bread.
The Sub Veg was developed by the Brazilian Vegetarian Society (SVB) in partnership with Subway. Foodservice consulting and research firm Galunion was also recruited to help create the new menu item.
“We have been working with Subway for a long time, and over the past few years we have realized the importance and strength of vegan options on the market,” Simone Galante, CEO of Galunion, said in a statement.
“SVB has been a great partner to better understand and direct this trend with our customers, so we saw a great opportunity to triangulate this partnership,” Galante added.
More than three years ago, SVB started an online petition urging Subway Brazil to include a vegan menu option. Customers can also order the Sub Veg in a wrap or as a salad.
This month, Subway UK made its Meatless Meatball Marinara sub a permanent fixture on its menu nationwide.
The fast-food chain successfully trialed the new menu option at select Manchester and Birmingham locations last October. The sandwich features plant-based meatballs covered in marinara sauce and topped with dairy-free cheese.
In January, Subway UK also began offering Vegan Cheese Toasted Bites nationwide. Customers can order the Cheese Toasted bites vegan by requesting dairy-free cheese.
Last year, Subway UK launched its Vegan Signature Loaded Wrap at all locations. The wrap features vegan patties, lettuce, onion, guacamole, peppers, tomato, and dairy-free garlic aioli in a tomato basil wrap. Previously, the dressing was a garlic mayonnaise that included dairy and eggs. The wrap’s garlic aioli is dairy- and egg-free.
Subway also trialed a plant-based meatball sandwich at more than 600 locations in the U.S. and Canada last September. The sandwich includes Beyond Meat’s meatless meatballs, marinara sauce, and grated parmesan cheese on a toasted six-inch sub. The sandwich is now available nationwide in Canada.
In 2018, Subway Finland added a spicy vegan steak sandwich to its menu. The sandwich features a soy-based “steak” patty and a plethora of veggies, including spinach, corn, peppers, red onion, peas, green chili, garlic, and carrot. It is customizable with a number of vegan-friendly sauces like barbecue and sweet onion sauce.
