Starbucks Launches Vegan-Friendly Chia Seed Witch’s Brew Frappuccino for Halloween

Starbucks U.S., Canada, and Mexico launched a new Halloween-themed drink called the Witch’s Brew Crème Frappuccino last week and according to employees, the sugary concoction can be made vegan.

“Our cauldron bubbles with a Halloween Frappuccino® Blended Beverage Crème delight that’s more treat than trick (or is it?)…” states the website. “The delicious orange crème flavor drink is dotted with imaginary Bat Warts and Lizard Scales.”

Starbucks’ new Halloween-inspired frapp features a bright purple, orange-flavored base swirled with “bat warts and lizard scales,” aka chia seed pudding dyed green. The drink as-is is made with dairy milk and topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of glittering green sugar. However, according to a discussion topic in r/vegan, the plant-based message boards of Reddit, the Witch’s Brew frapp can be made vegan, with a few modifications.

According to a Starbucks employee, the Halloween drink – said to taste like Fruity Pebbles cereal – can be ordered vegan without whip and with plant-based milk instead of dairy. “It’s basically sugar, seeds, and flavoring. We can’t guarantee anything cause we use the same equipment for everything though,” she said.

Despite the misleading name, Starbucks’ Crème Frappuccino Syrup is free from dairy-based ingredients. In the U.S., customers have the choice of swapping in soy, almond, or coconut milk while Starbucks Canada and Mexico offer soy and coconut.

The international coffee giant regularly launches seasonal drinks, but despite founder and executive chairman Howard Schultz identifying vegan options as a “huge” opportunity last May, many options require modification in order to be free from animal ingredients. However, the chain has made strides in introducing new, permanent vegan options like the Iced Vanilla Bean Coconutmilk LatteProtein Blended Cold Brews, and a Macadamia Cookie.

According to Starbucks, the drink is available while supplies last.
