(Updated October 30, 2019.) | Democratic Senator (D-NJ) and presidential candidate hopeful Cory Booker believes JUST’s vegan egg is a “game-changer.”
Josh Tetrick — CEO and co-founder of JUST — shared a video of VP at the Humane Society of the United States and co-founder at JUST, Josh Balk, meeting Booker on Monday.
“I finally got my hands on JUST Egg at the Washington D.C. H Street Whole Foods,” Booker said in the video. While the New Jersey senator didn’t share what he made, he described the vegan egg as “incredible.”
“I am so psyched,” he continued. “I can’t wait to see more of what [JUST does], but this is a game-changer in terms of the impact it’s going to have on the environment, for the mistreatment of animals, for the health of Americans, and globally.”
Booker announced his run for Democratic candidate in the 2020 presidential election earlier this year. Prior to this, the 50-year-old politician served as the 38th mayor of Newark (2006-2013). He assumed office as New Jersey Senator on October 31, 2013.
A vegan since November 2014, Booker has the biggest pro-animal rights voting record, according to the Humane Society Legislative Fund’s Humane Scorecard. He backs the scientific evidence on the climate crisis and is a supporter of the Green New Deal.
According to his campaign website, Booker would prohibit trophy hunting, make extreme acts of animal cruelty a federal crime, shut down all puppy mills, ban private ownership of big cats and primates, end cosmetic animal testing, and establish new protected wildlife habitats.
“Our treatment of animals is a test of our character and a measure of the compassion of our society,” says the website.
He is also a co-sponsor of Senator Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) Travelling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act, which would ban the use of wild animals in circuses.
“Senator Booker is who he seems. A man of deep integrity who is committed to making the world a little better. We’re lucky to have him as a leader,” Tetrick told LIVEKINDLY in an email.
Booker’s circle of compassion extends beyond the animals. In his political career, Booker has been a vocal supporter of ending the War on Drugs, abortion rights, the Medicare for All bill, a $15 an hour minimum wage, marriage equality, and protecting LGBTQ people from workplace discrimination.
Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect that Josh Balk, not Josh Tetrick, appears in the video with Senator Cory Booker.
