Peet’s Coffee vegan menu has expanded with an all-new item: a sausage and egg breakfast sandwich, which is available now as part of its Spring 2021 menu.
The coffee chain, which has 200 locations across the U.S., announced today its partnership with El Segundo, California-based plant-based meat maker Beyond Meat and food technology company Eat Just.
The new Everything Plant-Based Sandwich includes a savory Beyond Breakfast Sausage patty, the Just Egg Folded egg patty, and dairy-free cheddar cheese.
It’s notable that the Everything Plant-Based Sandwich is completely vegan. Several major chains have introduced meat-free breakfast sandwiches in an effort to meet the growing consumer demand for plant-based protein.
Starbucks offers the Impossible Breakfast Sandwich, which features a soy-based meat patty, but includes animal-based egg and cheese. For Starbucks, the launch is tied not only to meeting customer demand, but also its sustainability goals. Like Peet’s new menu item, Dunkin’s Beyond Breakfast Sandwich features the Beyond Breakfast Sausage. But, similar to Starbucks, it also contains egg and cheese.
“As consumers continue to demand more plant-based options we have expanded beyond alternative dairy, setting our sights on a plant-based breakfast sandwich that is not only better for the planet, but also every bite as delicious as your typical animal-based breakfast sandwich,” Lori Fulmer, Senior Food R&D Manager of Peet’s, said in a statement.
Also New at Peet’s: Cold Brew Oat Milk Latte
Apart from the breakfast sandwich, Peet’s is expanding its Spring 2021 drink menu with the limited Golden Spice Cold Brew Oat Latte. It will also feature its top-selling Horchata Cold Brew Oat Latte.
Peet’s describes the Golden Spice Cold Brew Oat Latte as an earthy blend of turmeric, cinnamon sugar, and oat milk topped off with cold brew coffee. But, it contains honey, so it is not vegan. The Horchata Cold Brew Oat Latte, however, a blend of cinnamon sugar and oat milk, is honey-free.
Peet’s first introduced oat milk in January 2020 and the dairy-free milk continues to grow in popularity. Dunkin’ began offering oat milk at the start of 2020 as well. And earlier this week, after months of testing at selected locations Starbucks announced that oat milk is now available nationwide.
