Dr. Neal Barnard, founding president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nonprofit organization made up of more than 12,000 doctor members, has been awarded for his service to the community. The esteemed physician is known for his extensive work in promoting disease prevention through vegan nutrition.
The Medical Society of the District of Columbia (MSDC) presented Dr. Barnard with the Distinguished Service Award at the organization’s 201st Annual Meeting and Reception last week. He has actively worked with MSDC and the American Medical Association (AMA) in order to improve access to healthy foods to underserved communities throughout DC.
“I am grateful to be able to work with my MSDC and AMA colleagues for better health and nutrition,” said Dr. Barnard in a statement.

In addition to his work with other medical associations, through PCRM Dr. Barnard has helped improve federal nutrition guidelines; he led a study that revealed how a plant-based diet can benefit those living with type-2 diabetes. At the Barnard Medical Center in DC, patients have access to plant-based cooking classes to help reduce the risk for heart disease and type-2 diabetes.
Dr. Barnard has also been instrumental in increasing awareness of the health risks that various medical studies have linked to animal products. Last month, PCRM launched a campaign urging DC residents to “break up with bacon,” noting that the popular breakfast food and other processed meat products have been linked to cancer. The campaign includes bus shelters throughout the city as well as print and radio ads. Last week, PCRM’s latest campaign, #EatPlantsNotPigs, was launched in Asheville, North Carolina, calling attention to the devastating pollution caused by hog waste lagoons in the wake of Hurricane Florence.
This is not the first time that Dr. Barnard has been recognized for his work. In October 2016, he was presented with the Lifestyle Medicine Trailblazer Award from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine in recognition of his contributions to patient care, research, and community service.
