Updated on October 2, 2019. Fast-casual restaurant chain QDOBA Mexican Eats has launched new vegan fajita bowls and burritos at all U.S. locations.
The new plant-based menu additions include Impossible meat, which QDOBA seasons with tomatoes, garlic, smoked chilis, paprika, and diced red onion. It originally added Impossible Food’s vegan meat to bowls and tacos earlier this year.
QDOBA’s nationwide Impossible meat launch followed a successful test at 60 locations across Michigan in Detroit, Flint, Lansing, and Traverse City in February. Impossible Foods said that it chose the location for the test because the southeast part of the state has some of the strongest Impossible meat sales in the nation outside of NYC and California.
“During our test, we quickly learned that consumers loved our unique take on Impossible, making it an easy decision to launch nationally,” said Jill Adams, vice president of marketing for QDOBA, in a statement.
Like other Mexican-inspired restaurant chains – – such as Taco Bell, Chipotle, and Moe’s — it’s easy to order a vegan meal at QDOBA. Tacos, burritos, or bowl made with corn and flour tortillas, black or pinto beans, brown or cilantro-lime rice, fajita vegetables, grilled veggies, potatoes, guac, and most of the salsas are all vegan.
Impossible Foods’ Impossible Burger — which cooks, looks, and tastes like its beef counterpart — originally debuted in high-end restaurants but has slowly become more readily available to mainstream consumers. Last summer it launched in White Castle — the nation’s first fast-food restaurant — after a successful trial where some locations sold as many as 300 meatless sliders a day.
It has also launched in major fast-food chain, Burger King. After a successful trial in 59 locations in St. Louis, Missouri, the plant-based Impossible Whopper was rolled out nationwide earlier this year.
The burger is also available at burger-centric restaurants like Bareburger, Mark Wahlberg’s Wahlburgers, Umami Burger, Applebees, the Hard Rock Cafe, and Dave & Buster’s. It is also available to purchase from 27 Gelson’s Market locations across Southern California.
