Leading UK retailer Marks & Spencer has just released a vegan faux fur winter coat that is sure to turn heads.
The cruelty-free item comes in cerise and dark marine – colours resembling hot pink and dark blue – and is one of the chain’s most popular pieces this season, according to Hello Magazine.
The coat provides a “luxurious finish” to your outfit, according to the item’s online description. “An oversized lapel gives this women’s coat a contemporary look, while the single-breasted hook and eye fastening secures this coat elegantly around you,” the description reads, adding that the vegan fur item will guarantee the wearer a “sartorial statement.”
The jacket has already won over some celebrity names, including English television and radio presenter Fearne Cotton and singer-songwriter Frankie Bridge.
Consumers are choosing fur-free more than ever. A 2016 YouGov poll unveiled that most people in Britain are against animal fur, with nine out of ten people voting that it is “unacceptable” to sell or purchase the item. Similar high figures are reported in other areas of Europe. Eighty-four percent of people in the Netherlands are against fur farming while 86 percent of Germans also oppose the industry.
Aligning with the low demand for animal fur, a growing list of brands are creating cruelty-free fur alternatives. Earlier this month, Kendall and Kylie Jenner released vegan and faux fur jackets as part of their clothing line Kendall + Kylie.
In October, Luxury brand Coach ditched mink, coyote, fox, and rabbit fur because “it’s the right thing to do,” according to the company’s chief executive.
Gucci, Diane von Furstenberg, and Burberry made similar pledges and designer Donatella Versace also swore off the cruel fabric for good. “Fur? I am out of that. I don’t want to kill animals to make fashion. It doesn’t feel right,” Versace stated earlier this year.
Marks & Spencer’s faux fur jacket is available online for £79.
