Little Caesars now has vegan pepperoni. From today, select Little Caesars will offer the Planteroni Pizza, which features Field Roast’s new Plant-Based Pepperoni.
The new vegan pepperoni-topped pizza currently being tested in Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, San Francisco, Portland, Oregon, and the chain’s hometown of Detroit
The vegan pepperoni features the same amount of protein per serving as animal-derived pepperoni—six grams—and is non-GMO and free of artificial flavors. Customers will also be able to order the meatless topping on any custom pizza.
“This is a huge moment for pizza lovers because for the first time, they have access to a zesty, bold plant-based pepperoni made with pea protein that absolutely delivers on taste,” Dan Curtin, President of Greenleaf Foods, owner of the Field Roast brand, said.
The artisan vegan meat company debuted the vegan pepperoni earlier this year. It’s made with potato and pea protein and seasoned with a blend of paprika, fennel, anise, cracked black pepper, garlic, and cayenne.
Sadly, Little Caesars doesn’t offer vegan cheese—yet. And if you don’t live in or near any of these cities—worry not. Field Roast’s vegan pepperoni is expected to hit store shelves later this year.
Little Caesars isn’t the only pizza chain to offer vegan options.
In November 2020, Pizza Hut added Beyond Meat’s vegan Italian sausage to its US. menus for a limited time. The addition made it the first-ever pizza company to offer plant-based meat toppings across the country.
“Our partnership with Pizza Hut is a category first,” Ethan Brown, CEO and Founder of Beyond Meat, said. “[W]e will continue to raise the bar on game-changing product innovations as we introduce the delicious taste of Beyond Meat products to pizza fans nationwide.”
For a limited time, Pizza Hut customers in the U.K. were also able to get their hands on the vegan meat. The chain launched three of Beyond Meat’s meatless toppings: Beyond Pork Crumbles, Beyond Beef Crumbles, and Beyond Italian Style Sausage.
In May of this year, Pizza Hut Canada also launched the Beyond Italian Sausage Crumbles, which are made from pea and rice protein.
In January, Papa John’s U.K. launched vegan cheese stuffed crust pizza. It also released two other plant-based menu items: Not-Chicken Vegan Bites and the limited-edition Alice Tai pizza. The chain created the latter in collaboration with Paralympic Gold medalist swimmer Alice Tai.
And Domino’s U.K. launched two new vegan options: Chick-Ain’t pizza and nuggets. The pizza features hand-stretched vegan dough, vine-ripened tomato sauce, dairy-free Cheezly, and plant-based chicken strips. The plant-based chicken nuggets are coated in crispy, southern-fried breadcrumbs and can be ordered with the chain’s vegan Garlic & Herb Dip.
