Rotterdam’s KFC will go meat-free for an entire week.
The Rotterdam KFC location will ditch meat for the Netherlands’ annual National Week Without Meat. The meat-free week is observed March 11 through the 17.
It will serve vegetarian “chickenless chicken crispy tenders and burgers.” This is the third annual National Week Without Meat.
“The initiators of the National Week Without Meat call on all Dutch people to refrain from eating meat (and fish) from 11 to 17 March, and to eat vegetarian instead. They want to make people aware of the positive impact of eating less meat and to show how easy it is to eat no meat (and fish),” Utrecht University website reads.
KFC Gets More Vegan Options
In order to keep up with shifting consumer preferences, KFCs around the world have been adding vegan-friendly options to menus.
The fast-food giant first announced its intentions of testing vegan chicken last May, citing attempts to offer customers healthier options.
“We know people are more passionate than ever about eating well, and we face a big challenge in shifting their perceptions of what we offer,” Victoria Robertson Head of Food Innovation for KFC UK, told the Mirror.
Last August, KFC joined forces with Beyond Meat to create the Beyond Fried Chicken.
KFC tested the new products for one day at a store in Atlanta last summer. The store sold out in less than five hours.
The company launched a new trial in more than 70 locations in Charlotte, Nashville, and surrounding areas earlier this month. It featured an updated vegan fried chicken recipe.
“KFC Beyond Fried Chicken is so delicious, our customers will find it difficult to tell that it’s plant-based,” Kevin Hochman, President, and Chief concept officer of KFC U.S., said in a statement.
He added: “I think we’ve all heard ‘it tastes like chicken’ — well our customers are going to be amazed and say, ‘it tastes like Kentucky Fried Chicken!‘”
KFC also launched vegan chicken burgers across all 900 UK locations last month.
The new menu item, dubbed The Zero Chicken Burger, features a Quorn patty coated in the company’s signature 11 herbs and spices.
