NARS Cosmetics has upset many loyal customers with their recent announcement that their company would no longer be labelled cruelty-free.
The beauty brand has been a favourable choice among people who choose to avoid products which require animal testing, however their decision to begin selling their makeup and skincare lines in China will put an unfortunate end to their cruelty free status.
With an estimated $50 billion spent in China’s beauty industry every year, it would be fair to assume that this was a forceful factor in the company’s decision.
Not one to keep quiet about her views on the unnecessary cruelty to animals, Kat Von D took to Instagram with a graphic image and an open response to NARS.
Being vegan and owning a cosmetics line of her own, Kat has committed to not selling in China where animal testing is a legal requirement for foreign beauty brands. Some other brands which currently sell in China include MAC Cosmetics, Clinique and Benefit.
Referring to her image, Kat goes on to say “This unnecessary cruelty is what you will be supporting every time you purchase one of their products [as well as any other company that CHOOSES to test on animals – because it is a choice].”
Amongst other similar posts, KVD’s public shaming and urge to boycott the company, has lead to a huge influx of comments on NARS’ social platforms #boycottnars.
Some may argue that animal testing is required as a customer safety precaution, however in reality there are many alternative methods. The most common being called “in vitro” testing, which uses human tissue to help identify chemical irritants. This form of testing is also more effective than animal testing.
NARS’ response to the flood of negative comments explained that “[They] firmly believe that product and ingredient safety can be proven by non-animal methods, but we must comply with the local laws of the markets in which we operate, including in China. We have decided to make NARS available in China because we feel it is important to bring our vision of beauty and artistry to fans in the region. NARS does not test on animals or ask others to do so on our behalf, except where required by law. NARS is committed and actively working to advance alternative testing methods.”
It is unfortunate to see that even with the angry backlash from their customers, NARS will still pursue to sell their products in China, however the silver lining in all of this is seeing not only high profile celebrities speak out against it, but the general public too.
Perhaps shoppers are becoming more discerning when it comes to purchasing products?
Revelist noted Kat had previously taken to Instagram in a more uplifting manner, stating that “Every purchase we make is a vote,” “When we buy products from a company that tests on animals, we are voting for cruelty — and no lipstick or eyeshadow is worth this. The good news is that we have the power to change this — simply by choosing to support cruelty-free beauty instead.”
