Joaquin Phoenix spent his weekend grilling vegan barbecue from Crossroads Kitchen.
Due to lockdown measures, the LA-based vegan restaurant has closed for dine-in customers. A few weeks ago, it began offering plant-based meal kits for customers to cook at home.
The meal kits include Spicy Impossible Wontons (made with vegan meat by Impossible Foods), Spaghetti & Meatballs, and the Grilling Kit. The latter—ordered by Phoenix—includes Impossible Burgers, homemade Italian-style sausages, smoked barbecue beans, and potato salad.
Crossroads Kitchen recently posted on Instagram: “We know what Joaquin Phoenix will be grilling this weekend—the Crossroads grilling kit! How about you guys? Call the front desk to order our kit to take home today.”
Other celebrities were also recently spotted on Crossroads’ Instagram including Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, and actress Christina Applegate.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage on, restaurants all over the world have taken a hit. Eighty-six percent of U.S. restaurant-owners now worry about their business’s future, says a new Dataessential study.
In a bid to try and help vegan restaurants, Maggie Baird—mom to Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish—launched Support and Feed in LA and NYC.
Crossroads Kitchen is part of the new initiative, which seeks to help struggling restaurants and feed frontline workers simultaneously. Customers place and pay for an order with participating restaurants, specifically stating it’s through Support and Feed.
Conscious Cleanup then delivers the food to a hospital, shelter, police station, or other organization in need. “Anywhere people need food, we’re taking food there,” Baird told vegan activist and actress Alicia Silverstone in a recent Instagram Live interview.
By Chloe, Pura Vita, and Donut Friend are also among the participating vegan restaurants in LA. In NYC, Beyond Sushi, Marty’s V Burger, Urban Vegan Kitchen, and VSpot are taking part.
“Please help,” Baird wrote on Instagram earlier this month. “You can order from any of these incredible plant-based restaurants.”
“The food will be delivered to a needy organization in a safe, coordinated way when it works for them. With enough time for the restaurant to plan and prepare,” she added. “You can also add it to a personal order if you want food yourself!”
