Kim Kardashian says “plant-based does a body good” after ditching meat earlier this year.
The reality star made the comment on Instagram this past week. Back in January, she took to Instagram to tell her then nearly 200 million followers she was ditching meat for a month. “Sister Boot Camp starts this month,” she wrote in an Instagram Story. “Plant based and two workouts a day for 30 days to get our mind and body right this year!”
This isn’t the first time Kardashian has talked about veganism. The beauty mogul—who founded cruelty-free cosmetics line KKW Beauty—first revealed she ditched meat and dairy back in 2019.
And while her plant-based diets have never been permanent, it appears Kardashian it sticking to it this time. But even if she doesn’t, studies show her dietary fads still having a big impact on the planet.
According to BBC’s climate change food calculator, which is based on an Oxford University study, simly eating less chicken—which is less environmentally damaging than other meats like lamb and beef—requires less resources and emits fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
Consuming chicken three to five times per week equates to roughly 284kg of a person’s total carbon footprint in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. It also uses approximately 19,025 liters of water. Eating chicken only once or twice a week contributes only 106kg of emissions and requires 7134 liters of water.
According to the study, going plant-based can reduce a person’s overall carbon footprint by two-thirds.
So, while Kardashian isn’t eating plant-based permanently, she’s still helping to minimize her impact on the environment. She’s also helping to spread the word about plant-based eating.
She promotes a plant-based diet to her now 206 million Instagram followers. In an Instagram Story earlier this year, the TV star shared a picture of some of Beyond Meat’s vegan meat products, including Beyond Breakfast Sausage, Beyond Meatballs, and Beyond Beef.
She’s also managed to convert several family members to a plant-based diet. She previously mentioned on Twitter that her children were joining her ditching meat, with the exception of her daughter, North, who still eats fish.
Her elder sister Kourtney shared an image of a plant-based meal on her Instagram Story with the caption “vegan sister lunch.” She tagged Kim and younger sister Khloe Kardashian in the Story.
Kim re-shared the post with her own caption: “I’ve officially converted three family members!!!” She added the hashtag #PlantBasedLife.
In the following Instagram story, Kim revealed her brother also sent her vegan pizza and ice cream. She wrote: “How cute is my brother?”
Kim later revealed she first went plant-based to help reduce her lifelong battle with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
“Before the arthritis hit, I spent about four months doing everything natural—every ointment, cream, serum, and foam you can possibly imagine and everything from the dermatologist,” she wrote in a blog post on Kourtney’s Poosh website.
“I even tried an herbal tea that tasted like tar. I tried celery juice for eight weeks. Then I’d do celery juice mixed with the tea. I would do that twice a day. I was just exhausted by everything. I changed my diet to plant-based (which I still follow),” she added.
Kim later revealed she had replaced all of her fur coats with vegan versions. “Remember when I wore this! She picked out the same look lol but fun fact- I took all of my fave furs and remade them in faux fur,” Kim shared on Instagram to her then 141 million followers along with a photo of her daughter North playing with a white fur coat.
