All the Best Vegan Hair Dyes to Get Ruby Rose’s Shimmery Violet Hair

Vegan celeb Ruby Rose initially kicked off the New Year by dying her blonde pixie locks an icy blue, joining Lady Gaga, Kylie Jenner, and K-pop star Taehyung of BTS in rocking what might be the color of the year.

But about one week later, she traded in blue for a shimmery pastel violet. The photo looks like something out of a science fiction movie:

So far, it looks like pastel is still in for 2019 – and it’s easy to get the look with cruelty-free and vegan hair care products. Here’s what you need to know if you’re dying to copy the “Batwoman” star’s pastel violet locks – and maybe consider embracing the unicorn armpit hair while you’re at it, too. Colorful hair is here to stay.

All the Best Vegan Hair Dyes to Get Ruby Rose’s Shimmery Violet Hair

1. Bleach

It’s best to start with a light base, which means you’ll likely have to bleach in order to get the best results. Cruelty-free and vegan brand Manic Panic’s Flash Lightning 40 Volume Cream Developer is perfect for lifting color from dark hair while its 30 Volume Kit is ideal for light to medium hair. Each kit comes with a shower cap, gloves, and a tint brush.

Depending on what you want, you might also have to use a vegan toner to remove and yellow or brassy tones from your hair. And if your hair isn’t light enough after the first bleach, experts recommend waiting at least two weeks between sessions to let your hair heal. Or, you can always go to a professional salon – Aveda and Paul Mitchell salons are both cruelty-free. If you’re bleaching at home, make sure to brush up on the steps first.

2. Punky Colour

Cruelty-free and vegan-friendly brand Punky Colour makes a vivid Violet semi-permanent hair color. Mix it with the brand’s Pastel Fix FX Shade Adjustor if you want to go light like Ruby.

3. Manic Panic

Old-school brand Manic Panic has been making alternative hair colors since the 1977 – so it’s no wonder that founders Tish and Snooky offer a few options for violet hair. The appropriately-named Ultraviolet is bold and vibrant on its own. Violet Night from the Amplified collection lasts 30 percent longer than the classic creme colors. Wear both colors bold and let it fade or mix it with the Manic Panic Pastel-izer for a lighter look.

Or, you can opt from Velvet Violet from the Creamtones collection, which gives you pastel locks like Ruby.

4. Arctic Fox

Cruelty-free and vegan brand Arctic Fox provides long-lasting semi-permanent color without harsh ingredients like peroxide ammonia, and ethyl alcohol. Fifteen percent of the proceeds also go to animal organizations that prevent abuse, such as Second Chance Animal Rescue. The Violet Dream color is perfect for getting the vibrant hair of your dreams.

5. Upkeep

Upkeep is an important step in helping your vegan violet locks last longer. Pastel violet fades notoriously fast, so avoid shampooing daily and opt for gentle cleansers like Puracy’s sulfate-free shampoo. Dry shampoo can help keep your hair looking healthy between washes. Cruelty-free and vegan brands LK Organics, R+Co, and Hair Dance all make aerosol-free dry shampoo.

You can also refresh your hair color with the Punky Purpledacious 3-in-1 Color Depositing Shampoo & Conditioner, which contains nourishing shea butter.
