Nothing says lunch quite like a good ol’ footlong. Throw in a bag of potato chips and a cold pop and you’ve got an afternoon meal of champions. Luckily, for all the sandwich lovers out there, Subway vegan food options are all but endless.
So, what all vegan eats does the sub shop have to offer?
Subway Vegan Food Options
Founded in 1965, Subway is synonymous with hunger-inducing sandwiches. Its customizable subs can be made in wrap form, and the chain offers a selection of salads, too.
From sourdough to Italian, most of the bread on the menu is vegan. And whether you opt for a footlong or a 6-inch sub, Subway has all the veggie fixings to please your grumbling belly. Lettuce, tomatoes, spinach, pickles, you name it. Sadly, the guac is extra.
Subway was ahead of the curve as far as offering vegan options goes. Back in 2012, the sandwich chain tested plant-based protein fillings at select locations in the Washington D.C. area. The trial included three subs: the Sweet Riblet, the Malibu Greek, and the Italian Black Bean.
In 2019, the chain partnered with Beyond Meat to launch plant-based Meatball Marinara subs at select locations. In September of that year, Subway offered the meatless sub for a limited time in more than 600 locations across the U.S. and Canada.
Currently, the Veggie Delight sandwich is the only vegan-friendly sub available across all Subway locations. The sandwich features the 9-grain wheat bread, lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and red onions.
But, being that Subway is a create-your-own sandwich chain—you can easily customize your sub just the way you want it. (Extra black olives, please.) More on that in a bit.
Subway Vegan Food Around the World
Overseas, Subway vegan food options are just as expansive.
The sandwich chain launched vegan chicken subs and double chocolate cookies throughout the U.K. and Ireland in December 2020. According to Subway, the T.L.C. (Tastes Like Chicken) Sub is “chicken-y in taste and chicken-less in contents.” Also available as a salad or a wrap, it features soy-based protein and Violife vegan cheese.
“Our new plant-based T.L.C. Sub will delight both our vegan and non-vegan fans,” Angelina Gosal, the head of marketing of Subway UK and Ireland, said in a statement. “With our new additions, we now have one of the biggest and tastiest plant-based menus on the high street.”
The following month, Subway UK added Vegan Cheese Toasted Bites to the menu. The chain added a vegan meatball sub to its permanent menu in March 2020. The launch followed a successful trial at select Birmingham and Manchester locations. The sub includes vegan meatballs smothered in marinara sauce and topped with dairy-free cheese.
That summer, the chain took things up a notch, adding a meaty vegan garlic wrap to the menu. The sandwich features a vegan patty and dairy-free garlic aioli.
Subway Brazil also has vegan options. Locations throughout the country added a 100 percent plant-based sandwich to the menu. Called the “Sub Veg,” the sandwich features soy-based protein. It also includes creamy, dairy-free cheddar cheese, veggies, and barbecue sauce between slices of white Italian bread.
