An overnight homeless shelter in Minneapolis marked the Super Bowl weekend with some game day snacks of their own. Simpson Housing Services, who house and support those experiencing homelessness, served countless vegan ‘chicken wings’ to guests over the weekend. The snacks were donated by animal rights organisation PETA, and created by The Herbivorous Butcher.
As Super Bowl weekend approached, thousands of visitors packed out Minneapolis streets, along with volunteers and extra security. Meanwhile, “one group has seemingly disappeared: the homeless”, the Star Tribune reports.
According to the publication, venues opened their doors a little wider and for a little longer over the weekend, “to give the homeless a place to escape the crowds and bitter temperatures during the day”.
Gail Dorfman, executive director of St. Stephen’s Human Services told the Star Tribune that “boosting efforts to help the homeless isn’t meant to disguise an issue but rather help vulnerable people escape the crowds and heavy law enforcement presence, which can sometimes be traumatizing”.
Simpson Housing Services, the organisation serving the vegan snacks, provide emergency shelter to 66 people every night. Plant-based meal options can help people who are homeless stay true to their beliefs and principles, a right that needn’t be stripped due to living arrangements.
The inclusive meal option was created by The Herbivorous Butcher, a Minneapolis-based brother and sister duo. The brand aims to deliver plant-based meats that are “always fresh, flavorful, and protein-rich so you never feel like you’re sacrificing anything for healthy and ethical eating”.
