Canadian vegan-friendly accessories company Herschel Supply has partnered with Hello Kitty creators Sanrio to launch a new line of bags and backpacks.
Created in the 1970s, Hello Kitty – full name Kitty White – has long dominated the fashion industry. The Japanese cat with an iconic red bow and no mouth has collaborated with a number of major brands, including Asos and Converse.
Made from flight satin, The Herschel Supply Hello Kitty bag collection includes mini, XS, and mid-volume backpacks, as well as hip packs, in shades of Cameo Rose, Highrise, or black. “Designed to celebrate the beloved character, each tonal style is finished with Hello Kitty’s signature red bow,” says Herschel Supply.
Founded in 2009, a number of Herchel’s designs are vegan-friendly. According to the brand, each one of its accessories is “thoughtfully designed from the ground up to include details that aid in daily journeys.” Each item is inspired by the “world around us” and aims to “evoke nostalgia yet offer modern functionality.”
The Rise of Vegan-Friendly Accessories
As the fashion industry becomes more compassionate, more vegan-friendly accessories are appearing on the market. A number of major designer labels ditched fur last year for ethical reasons.
Earlier this month, luxury Italian designer Armani put its vegan fur accessories front and center of its Autumn/Winter 2019 fashion show in Milan. It dropped real fur from its designs back in 2016, after making use of “technological progress” that provides the fashion industry with “valid alternatives” to the material.
“My company is now taking a major step ahead, reflecting our attention to the critical issues of protecting and caring for the environment and animals,” Giorgio Armani said at the time.
Affordable retailers are also increasing their vegan-friendly accessory options. At the end of 2018, retail giant Walmart launched a new range of vegan leather phone cases, bags, and backpacks, from private label Motile.
Bearpaw – a California footwear company – launched shearling-free alternative to Ugg boots, and major sneaker brand Converse continuously launches new vegan-friendly ranges. Most recently, the company collaborated with London designer Hannah Weiland, who specializes in faux fur. Each shoe includes a strip of Weiland’s signature fur material on the back.
Herschel Supply’s Hello Kitty accessories will be available from Sanrio and Herschel Supply online from January 22, as well as Sanrio boutiques.
