Love ketchup? Now you can have it for dessert too—Heinz has launched a vegan DIY ketchup sorbet kit.
In celebration of National Ice Cream Month, the company has created a limited edition range of Heinz Creamz kits available in five flavors: Ketchup, Mayonnaise, Saucy Sauce, BBQ, and Salad Cream.
For £15, you get everything you need to make the bizarre sweet treat. The kit includes the condiment, a reusable ice cream tub, and a gold engraved spoon, as well as an ice cream recipe. The ketchup kit includes a guide on how to make vegan sorbet.
If you don’t want to purchase the whole kit, the recipes are also available directly from the Heinz website. To make the sorbet, you’ll need ketchup, cold water, and agave syrup.
David Chalbert of Heinz Sauces said in a statement about the unique new offering: “this summer is looking different for many of us, and while we might be staycationing or staying at home more than in other years, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the joys of good ice cream.”
He added: “we know it might seem like a bit of a crazy combo to some – but with Heinz always at the forefront of innovation, anything is possible.”
The company also teamed up with pizza chain Papa John’s earlier this year to launch a limited-edition baked bean-topped pizza, which was also available in a vegan version.
If you’re feeling hesitant about the idea of Ketchup sorbet, Angela Hui at Huffington Post UK did a taste test. Her thoughts? It’s a bit odd. She wrote for the publication: “It’s difficult to get the image of eating frozen ketchup out of my mind as I eat it. I have one small spoonful and I’m done.”
While Hui wasn’t a fan of the tomatoey sorbet, she did note that “it could be worth trying in a bloody mary cocktail instead of ice cubes.”
The limited-edition Heinz Creamz DIY kits are available from the Heinz website.
