Updated October 7, 2019. | James Cameron’s documentary about the world’s top vegan athletes, “The Game Changers,” is coming to Netflix later this month.
The new film “documents the explosive rise of plant-based eating in professional sports, mixing real-time, groundbreaking science with cinematic stories of struggle and triumph.”
The documentary is directed by the award-winning filmmaker Louie Psihoyos (2009’s “The Cove” about the Taiji dolphin hunt), and executive produced by Cameron, Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and James Wilks; who also narrates the film.
Wilks is the plant-based winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” a former UFC athlete, and elite special forces trainer. In “Game Changers,” Wilks travels the world speaking to elite athletes, soldiers, and scientists about the benefits of eating plant-based. Wilks shared the news about being number one pre-order on iTunes news via an Instagram last month.
“I figured @gamechangersmovie would be ranked as the number one documentary on iTunes, but am shocked and stoked to see that we are currently the number ONE best-seller of ALL movie pre-orders,” said Wilks.
Wilks learned that many athletes are already trying out a vegan diet.
“Athletes are in touch with their bodies in a way many ‘regular’ people aren’t,” he said. “And so many of them tell us that they can feel animal foods increasing inflammation and slowing them down. It’s pretty cool to hear these so many athletic men and women backing up the science with their own personal experiences.”
In addition to testimonies from Wilks and Schwarzenegger, “The Game Changers” also approaches the world-record-holding strongman, Patrick Baboumian; five-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton; professional weightlifter Kendrick Farris; ultramarathon runner Scott Jurek, and football players Griff Whalen and Lou Smith.
“Seeing through the myths about meat, protein, and strength gives us a tremendous amount of leverage, not only for our own performance and health but also to help the planet we live on,” adds Wilks.
“The Game Changers” premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2018. It enjoyed a global theatrical release on September 16th, 2019 and has been available on iTunes since the start of the month. It will launch on Netflix on October 16.
