Dairy Queen has launched vegan ice cream bars nationwide.
The dairy-free ice cream bars are a twist on the chain’s classic Dilly Bars. Instead of dairy, the bars feature a coconut cream base and a chocolate-flavored coating.
The vegan Dilly Bars were initially available at select Dairy Queen locations in April. Word spread fast through social media after the Facebook page for the Dairy Queen in Alliance, Nebraska, teased the new frozen treats. Eagle-eyed customers also spotted the new dessert on a menu in Las Vegas labeled “coming soon.”
Animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) campaigned for the chain to add more vegan options.
In a statement, the group said: “PETA has campaigned for Dairy Queen to add vegan options to its menu for years. These cow-free bars are currently available at participating Dairy Queen locations. [H]opefully, [they’re] a sign the chain will be launching more vegan options in the future.”
Dairy Queen’s Misty Slushes are also vegan.
Vegan Ice Cream Goes Mainstream
Dairy Queen isn’t the only fast-food chain to debut vegan ice cream. As the demand for vegan and plant-based food increases around the world—companies are releasing new vegan products to cater to consumers’ growing needs.
Last year, Baskin Robbins—one of the world’s largest ice cream chains—launched its first non-dairy ice creams. The chain now offers three vegan flavors: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Extreme, and Coffee Caramel Chunk.
Ben & Jerry’s launched a vegan ice cream range in 2016. The range features 12 almond milk-based flavors. These include vegan takes on classics like Cherry Garcia, Cinnamon Buns, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Earlier this year, Ben & Jerry’s released three new sunflower butter-based vegan flavors.
In a statement, Ben & Jerry’s CEO, Matthew McCarthy, said: “Plant-based eating is one of the biggest trends in the world and ice cream lovers everywhere have shouted for non-dairy/vegan options that rise to the levels of Ben & Jerry’s euphoric awesomeness.”
Major ice cream brands Häagen-Dazs and Breyers also offer vegan options.
