There’s nothing like a festival to celebrate food, and on March 1, the University of Manchester is giving hummus its day. The university’s Lebanese Society is hosting Manchester’s first annual, completely vegan, all you can eat hummus festival, and everyone is invited to double dip.
The Lebanese Society created a Facebook event to promote the festival. Simply put, their tagline reads, “Hummus Hummus Hummus Hummus! It’s not just a dip, it’s the main course!”
The founders emphasize that all the chickpea-based spreads served will be “authentic”, “all vegan”, and “extremely delicious”. Everyone is welcome – students, members of the public, university staff, vegans, and omnivores alike. Hummus doesn’t discriminate, and consumers go crazy for it – the worldwide market value is expected to exceed $1.1 billion by 2022. However, at this festival, hummus lovers can purchase a pot for just £1.
In addition to bowls upon bowls of creamy, tahini-and-chickpea-based dip, a range of entertainment will be provided. The Society has planned for a blindfolded hummus tasting competition, and those who are looking for a more substantial meal can purchase vegan, hummus-filled wraps.
So far, just under 3,800 Facebook users have said they are interested in this plant-powered event. However, this number will undoubtedly climb in the two weeks leading up to the festival.
A local news outlet, Manchester Evening News, interviewed the Society’s founder to understand her inspiration for organizing this event. Founder Laura Najem expressed her desire to bring Lebanese students together and create a feeling of home in Manchester. Further, after doing some research, the Society’s committee discovered a significant demand for hummus by university students, many of whom represent an increasing number of vegan millennials.
The all you can eat hummus festival will be held on March 1 at Manchester University’s Student Union, between 10 am to 4 pm. In the words of the Society, “Hummus. Be there for it.”
