Cadbury Just Launched Vegan Bournville Buttons

Multinational confectionary company Cadbury has launched share bags of buttons made with Bournville dark chocolate, and you can buy them at Sainsbury’s.

Bournville chocolate – previously sold in bar format – is made with a vegan, milk-free recipe.

According to Cadbury, the release was inspired by the growth of the dark chocolate market as well as the success of its existing share bags.

“Dark chocolate penetration is growing in the UK, and we know there are only a few players present within sharing bag,” Mathieu Maggi, the brand manager for Cadbury Bournville, said in a statement. “By teaming the most recognizable dark chocolate brand with the iconic Cadbury Giant Button format, we believe we have created a real opportunity for retailers to drive sales.”

The new dark chocolate buttons were released just in time for Easter.

Aside from Bournville, Cadbury doesn’t offer many vegan options. Its classic Easter offering, the Creme Egg, is made with dried egg whites and milk. However, one small vegan business in Yorkshire is on a mission to provide Creme Egg fans with an animal-free option.

Mummy Meagz – The Indulgent Vegan Kitchen created a vegan version of the chocolate egg and it’s twice the size of the Cadbury version.

According to the pensioner-run brand, the product is “impossibly indulgent and handmade with love in the UK by Mummy Meagz.” It added, “[The vegan creme egg] is the perfect free from sweet treat for yourself or a loved one this Easter.”

The vegan chocolate market is growing. As well as selling Cadbury’s Bournville Giant Buttons, Sainsbury’s introduced a vegan white chocolate and strawberry egg under its Free From range. The baby pink-coloured Easter egg is “flecked and flavoured with delicious strawberry pieces” and tastes like milkshake, according to the supermarket.

Supermarket chain Aldi also released its own dairy-free Easter offering; a dark chocolate egg with Ferrero Rocher-style chocolates.

Popular high street chocolatier Hotel Chocolat is offering an extensive vegan chocolate range this Easter. It notes on its website, “Whatever your reason for going vegan, there’s no need to give up good chocolate this April 21st.”

You can buy Cadbury’s Bournville Giant Buttons for £1.50 for a 110g bag at Sainsbury’s.
