US based vegan chain restaurant, By Chloe, is coming to the UK and the first store is set to open before the end of the year. London will be the home of By Chloe’s first international site, and it’s doors are expected to open this autumn in Covent Garden. The chain have recently invested up to $13 million dollars in international development and it’s speculated that they have plans to open more restaurants in London, Europe and the Middle East.
Chloe Coscarelli, co-founder and namesake of By Chloe, has recently left the company after claims that the chain’s partners were looking to open up stores in her name that weren’t plant-based. Coscarelli became the first ever vegan to win a televised culinary competition when she won Cupcake Wars in 2010.
Coscarelli’s departure has left Samantha Wasser, co-founder and president of By Chloe, in charge of taking the brand across the pond to Europe, but Wasser seems excited by the move claiming that ‘international expansion was always part of [By Chloe’s] long-term plan.’ She believes that London is the place to kickstart the international sector of the business: ‘I’d read that London is one of the greatest food scenes in the world,’ says Wasser, ‘once I visited, I saw what the hype was about. We’ve built a huge following on social media and have fans in multiple countries consistently asking when we’re coming.
By Chloe currently has stores open in New York, Boston, L.A. and Providence and has thus far proved to be a big hit. In New York a particular favourite seems to have been the guac burger and was the reason for queues out the door when By Chloe started opening stores in 2015. The chain’s menu offers a wide range of plant-based and nutritious dishes and even features treats for furry friends including ‘pupcakes’, cupcakes for dogs made out of whole oats. Each city has a signature dish that doesn’t appear on other menus, for example Boston has the ‘lobster roll’ made out of heart of palm. As yet, Wasser is undecided on what London’s signature dish will be but you can bet it’ll be tasty.
London is already home to some great plant-based restaurants and stores, and recently opened up a vegan supermarket in West Kensington. However, the vegan population in the UK is ever growing and an international addition to London is welcome and shows off the variety people can expect when embarking on a plant-based diet. Londoners now eagerly await the official opening date so they can get their hands on one of those guac burgers.
