Burger King Singapore just introduced the Plant Based Whopper nationwide—it features a vegan burger patty made by the Vegetarian Butcher.
So far, Burger King has introduced vegan meat-based options in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Latin America, Japan, the UK, South Korea, Europe, Indonesia, and now Singapore, too.
As in other locations, Singapore’s Plant Based Whopper combines vegan meat with conventional toppings, including egg-based mayonnaise. Burger King also cooks the patty alongside animal products such as traditional beef.
“We are very excited to finally bring the plant-based Whopper to Singapore,” said Burger King Singapore’s marketing director Irene Tay. “We received many requests from local fans who have been waiting for it to arrive at our restaurants, especially after they’ve seen the plant-based Whopper in other countries.”
Burger King Singapore and the Vegetarian Butcher say they have worked closely to develop and “nail” the “iconic flame-grilled taste” of the classic Whopper using vegan meat.
“This is the first time Burger King Singapore is introducing a plant-based burger and also one that is definitely worth the wait,” added Tay.
Burger King Singapore Launches Vegan Meat
The Plant Based Whopper is designed for flexitarians, meat eaters, and those looking to make a more environmentally-friendly fast-food choice without completely cutting out animal products.
This tack has been popular with QSR brands around the world, and KFC, McDonald’s, and Starbucks have all introduced options combining plant-based and animal-based ingredients.
Flexitarian and “meat-reducer” consumers are the primary drivers of the current vegan food boom, and Singapore is no exception. According to Statista, health concerns are the primary motivators for the overwhelming majority of Singaporeans following plant-based or flexitarian diets.
At the end of last year, Singapore became the first place in the world to approve and debut cell-based meat, and even the government has invested in vegan protein production. As noted by Burger King Singapore’s marketing director, the chain launched the Plant Based Whopper following notable demand from its local customers.
Burger King’s Plant Based Whopper was exclusively available from Deliveroo between June 18 and 21, and launched nationwide to all 50 Singapore restaurants on June 22—the same day the company reintroduced dine-in service with safe distancing measures.
A Plant Based Whopper costs S$7.90 à la carte or S$10 as a meal with fries and a drink.
