Vegan meat company, Beyond Meat, made a huge announcement today. They introduced the ‘Beyond Sausage.’
The Beyond Sausage comes after the brilliant success of the Beyond Burger which ‘bleeds’ just like animal based beef.
Designed to replicate a pork sausage, the product’s nutritional profile is more impressive than it’s animal-derived counterpart. With properties such as more protein, 43% less fat, 38% less saturated fat and, 27% fewer calories and 26% less sodium, this sausage will give you all the taste of a pork sausage with less guilt.
The protein in this sausage is made from peas, fava beans, and rice. Beetroot is added to give the sausage a ‘meaty’ colour, the ‘juiciness’ is all thanks to coconut oil and the casing on the outside is made from algae.
From today, the sausages will be available exclusively at the Beyond Burger restaurant at the Whole Foods Market on Pearl Street in Boulder. However, it’s expected that the Beyond Sausage will become more widely available in early 2018. Currently, there are three flavours of the sausage: Original Bratwurst, Hot Italian, and Sweet Italian.
CEO of Beyond Meat, Ethan Brown, has commented on his excitement about the new release. ‘I love Beyond Sausage first and foremost because it’s truly so enjoyable to eat but also because I see it as an advance in our team’s relentless march toward a perfect build of meat from plants,’ he said. Adding, ‘Though we aren’t there yet, I’m encouraged by the progress we’ve made with Beyond Sausage and look forward to hearing what the consumer thinks.’
