Ben & Jerry’s dairy-free line of ice creams is growing! On Wednesday, the popular creamery announced the debut of its latest dairy-free flavor—Karamel Sutra Core—which is available in stores now.

The vegan sweet treat features chocolate and caramel ice cream made from almond milk. It features fudge chips sprinkled throughout and soft caramel sauce “core.”

It’s a dairy-free dupe of the original Karamel Sutra Core variety, which was released in 2002.

Ben & Jerry’s announced the vegan flavor’s arrival on Instagram and Twitter writing: “Happy hump day, Karamel Sutra lovers! Have you met Karamel Sutra Core Non-Dairy? This indulgent flavor is now also available as a certified #vegan pint!”

Ben & Jerry’s Dairy-Free Ice Cream Line

Karamel Sutra Core marks Ben & Jerry’s 17th foray into the world of dairy-free ice creams. Most recently, the Vermont-based brand launched a vegan version of the fan-favorite flavor Phish Food last month.

That plant-based dessert features an almond milk base as well as coconut oil and soy protein. It consists of chocolate ice cream with marshmallow, caramel swirls, and fudge fish, just like the original.

A while back, we created Phish Food ice cream with our neighbors in Vermont. Now there’s Phish Food Non-Dairy, too; like the original, this vegan version supports the charitable efforts of the WaterWheel Foundation,” the brand said in a statement at the time.

Ben & Jerry’s crafted its first dairy-free ice creams in 2016 with the debut of four vegan flavors—PB & Cookies, Coffee Caramel Fudge, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Chunky Monkey. Each one is made with almond milk, as are some of the brand’s other vegan varieties like Cherry Garcia.

From Almonds to Sunflowers

In January 2020, the company launched three dairy-free flavors made with a sunflower butter base—“Milk” & Cookies, Crème Brûlée Cookie, and Mint Chocolate Cookie.

Plant-based eating is one of the biggest trends in the world and ice cream lovers everywhere have shouted for non-dairy/vegan options that rise to the levels of Ben & Jerry’s euphoric awesomeness,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy said in a statement at the time.

Ben & Jerry’s also used a sunflower butter base to create its dairy-free Change the Whirled flavor. It was developed in partnership with vegan racial justice activist and athlete, Colin Kaepernick, in December 2020.

The company continues to donate a portion of the flavor’s sales to the Know Your Rights Camp. Kaepernick founded the organization to advance the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities.

Additionally, Ben & Jerry’s unveiled a mural and billboards in Tampa Bay, Florida, days before the Super Bowl took place in that city. The artwork featured Kaepernick and the phrase “I Know My Rights,” an ode to the activist’s ongoing quest for racial justice.
