Ashanti has provided vegan meat breakfasts and face masks to doctors, nurses, and other frontline workers amid the coronavirus outbreak.
The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, who doesn’t eat meat, teamed up with Dunkin’ Donuts to deliver hundreds of coffees and Beyond Meat sausage sandwiches to Northwell Health’s Glen Cove Hospital.
According to Newsday, Ashanti picked the plant-based sandwich because she believes it is “a much healthier choice.”
“I try my best to live a healthy lifestyle. And to me, it’s a much healthier choice,” she said. “So I just felt that this was a kind gesture to keep it in a healthy sense and still make people happy.”
The singer took to Instagram to thank everyone involved. “Just a girl from Glen Cove Long Island. Thank you guys for all of your hard work and sacrifice. Thank you to Beyond Meat and Dunkin.” she wrote.
The Northwell Health Foundation—which has a network of physicians and locations in New York—also took to social media to thank Ashanti for her generosity.
“Shout out to Grammy Award-winning singer, actress, and Long Island native Ashanti for donating 30,000 N95 masks and for fueling our Northwell Health #healthcareheroes at Glen Cove Hospital with 400 breakfasts from Beyond Meat and Dunkin’ Donuts,” the hospital tweeted.
In the midst of the global pandemic, a number of celebrities are doing their part to help healthcare providers, frontline workers, and anyone else in need of a helping hand.
Academy Award-winning English actor Olivia Colman “rolled up her sleeves” last week to make 100 vegan meals, which she helped deliver to London’s most vulnerable communities. Colman teamed up with plant-based community food kitchen and cookery school Made In Hackney. The charity is providing 500 emergency meals each day to people in need during the pandemic.
“We’re on track to provide 34,080 meals by mid-June … Thank you for helping us make this happen. We find this number staggering, simultaneously proud of the service whilst devastated at the level of need—much of which is still not being met,” the charity said on Instagram.
Last month, Maggie Baird—mother to vegan singer Billie Eilish and her music producer brother Finneas Baird—helped launch Support and Feed. The initiative helps support local businesses and supplies plant-based meals to shelters, hospitals, and first responders living in Los Angeles and New York City.
