Adidas’ Stan Smith sneaker range just got a sustainable upgrade.
The brand is launching its iconic tennis-inspired design in several new styles. As well as synthetic materials, each features PRIMEGREEN, a virgin plastic-free material, made from recycled polyester.
The range, called Stan Smith, Forever, is the next step in Adidas’ mission to reduce plastic waste, according to a press release sent to LIVEKINDLY. By 2024, the brand has pledged to ditch virgin polyester and only use 100 percent recycled polyester in all of its products.
The new collection is split into two chapters. The first consists of three unique earth-inspired Stan Smith designs. One features colorful planet graphics on the heel and another is covered in embossed planets with gold eyelets. The third features a green heel tab and earth-inspired embroidery.
Then there’s the second, and (arguably) more fun, chapter of Stan Smith, Forever, which comes complete with Kermit the Frog and Disney-inspired designs.
Again, each sneaker features PRIMEGREEN, but this time, the shoes are adorned with popular green characters from Marvel, Disney, Pixar, and Star Wars. These include: Monster Inc’s Mike Wazowski, Toy Story’s Rex, and even The Hulk.
Adidas’ Stan Smiths, Sustainable & Vegan
This isn’t the first time Adidas’ Stan Smiths have received a sustainable makeover. In 2018, the brand collaborated with Stella McCartney to launch the design, originally made with leather, in vegan materials.
Then the duo teamed up again in 2019 to launch another version of the vegan shoe. This time around, it featured rainbow laces, punched-out rainbow stars, and an image of McCartney herself on the tongue.
According to the sustainability-focused fashion designer, her husband commissioned the company to make her a pair of vegan Stan Smiths for her birthday.
After that, she convinced the brand to do a whole animal-free line. And it was a hit. She said back in 2019: “So many young people came into our stores to enquire about the Stan Smith, asking questions about what the trainer was made with, telling our staff about why it was important for them to choose a vegan shoe over a leather one and what it represented.”
She added: “This is the future.”
The new PRIMEGREEN Stan Smith, Forever designs will be available from Adidas and select retailers by the beginning of April.
