British retailer Argos has released a new Christmas tree aimed at people with cats.
Because of their inquisitive, playful nature, Christmas trees, with their lights, tinsel, and baubles, are the perfect playground for a cat. However, for their owners, cleaning up the mess left behind often isn’t so fun.
Christmas trees can also be quite dangerous for cats, if the pine needles from a real tree are ingested they can pose a health risk, and if a cat jumps on a large tree which topples over, they can get hurt.
But Argos claims it has found the solution. The chain’s new pre-lit six-foot parasol tree has a long stem, with the branches well out of reach of mischievous pets.
“Keep your perfectly placed baubles, bows, and bells out of reach of curious, crawling kids or your cats’ playful paws with this 6ft parasol tree,” says Argos on its website.
It continues, “If Santa’s been extra generous, there’s plenty of room to stack pressies underneath rather than scattering them around it. It’s also a great alternative to the traditional tree if you’re a tad tight for space.”
Argos is known for releasing creative products for its customers. Back in the summer, the chain made headlines after it released the world’s first-ever “vegan BBQ,” for those wanting to keep their plant-based food separate from meat throughout grilling season.
With regard to the tree, reactions from customers are split, with Twitter users labeling the product “ugly.” Another wrote, “My cats saw this and laughed. Amateurs.”
However, others think the tree, which has a five-star rating online, is a good buy. One customer, who reviewed the tree on the company’s website, stated it was “really lovely” and “very space saving.”
Speaking to the national newspaper the Sun about its Christmas tree options this year, a spokesperson for Argos said, “We sell a range of Christmas trees that cater to different tastes, needs, and budgets.”
