Vegan actor and activist Pamela Anderson has long been vocal about animal rights, frequently using her large platform to generate conversation and inspire change. Now, the 51-year-old’s advocacy is motivating others in the entertainment industry to make meaningful changes.
In a letter penned for The Guardian, Anderson spoke about her relationship with veganism and her passion for animal rights. “You learn as you go along; you make changes,” she wrote, admitting that she previously advertised a fur collection in Russia. “Today I wouldn’t wear fur, and I don’t want to glamorize it by wearing faux, but it’s still better than wearing someone’s else’s skin,” she said. The star went on to reveal that she sent faux fur coats to Melania Trump and Kim Kardashian West, and “both have sworn off fur since.”
Anderson appears to have gifted Trump with the coat in May of last year; she shared a photograph of a thank you letter, signed by Trump herself, on Twitter. The letter reveals that Trump received an item from Only Me, Russia’s largest producer of eco-friendly faux fur. Anderson is a brand ambassador for the business, which features a Pamela Anderson collection of fashion among its range. In her thank you note, Trump noted she is grateful, adding, “Together, we can empower more women to stand up for their beliefs.” Shortly after the gesture, Donald Trump’s East Wing communications director confirmed that Melania no longer wears fur.
A few months prior, in the September of 2017, Anderson penned an open letter to Kardashian urging her to “swear off fur this winter.” In the letter, she spoke about the egregious conditions of fur farms, noting that Kardashian would “be horrified” by the footage. In May this year, Kardashian spoke publicly about her newfound appreciation of faux fur, naming it her “new thing.”
It’s not the only time Anderson has taken a stance against fur. Just days ago, the model called out Prada designer Miuccia Prada for their use of fur for fashion. “I have long admired your creativity…but I was disappointed to learn from my friends at PETA that instead of going fur-free, Prada has chosen merely to reduce the amount of animal pelts that it sells,” she wrote in an open letter, later adding that, “‘Humane fur’ is like ‘merciful murder’: It doesn’t exist.”
