Vegan actor Woody Harrelson credits his plant-based diet for his high energy levels.
In an interview with In Style in the days leading up to the 2018 film “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” in which Harrelson played Beckett, he said, “I eat vegan, but I mostly eat raw. If I have a cooked meal, I feel my energy drop. So when I first started shifting my diet, it wasn’t as much a moral or an ethical pursuit but an energetic pursuit.”
The 57-year-old star previously encouraged actor Liam Hemsworth and “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink to go vegan. Harrelson is also the owner of the world’s first organic vegan beer garden.
In Style believe Harrelson’s plant-based diet is what is keeping him looking young. “Prior to our interview, he shuffles out of the house, sticks his head into the pool, and then heads straight for a vegan repast: salad, avocado, tahini, hummus, seed crackers, all of which must be contributing to the [then] 56-year-old’s looking about 45,” the magazine wrote.
Later in the interview, In Style told the Texas native, “you look good! Is it that vegan life? You legitimately don’t seem to age.”
Harrelson responded that “diet is crucial.”
Energy is important for Harrelson, who at times works on multiple film projects.
He explained, “On this last film it was six to eight weeks of at minimum 12-hour days. Which is cool if you’ve got your schedule figured out so you’re shooting two months and then taking time off, but I haven’t been doing that. It’s just been back-to-back.”
While Harrelson’s initial reasons for ditching animal products are due to a consciousness of health, it seems the star is increasingly interested in the ethical reasoning behind the lifestyle. Harrelson previously appeared in a thought-provoking video alongside fellow vegan Sir Paul McCartney. The video addressed the ethical and environmental complications surrounding animal agriculture and urged viewers to reduce their meat intake.
In the video, Harrelson stated: “A third of all cereal crops and more than 95% of soy is turned into feed for farmed animals.”
When speaking to In Style, Harrelson mused: “If we were to really change things and put in one-thousandth of the budget that was spent on the military for the past five years into protecting rain forests or supporting alternative energy, it would be amazing.”
The “Hunger Games” star also nodded to Stella McCartney’s vegan fashion, naming it “the most stylish thing” he owns. Harrelson also mentioned Jeanne Angelheart, who creates cruelty-free clothing and serves vegan food to people in Harrelson’s neighborhood.
