Hummus Pods, the signature plant-based and vegan hummus-filled pockets created by The Modern Pod Company, are set to expand across the United States, according to a recent press release.
Hummus Pods are a frozen prepared snack consisting of “crispy chewy multigrain shells encapsulating creamy, boldly seasoned hummus.” The products are vegan and made from all Non-GMO Project Verified ingredients, including extra-virgin olive oil, chickpeas, teff, and quinoa. The company uses locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible.
According to Becky McCCartin, a Modern Pod Product Developer, “We’ve selected the best ingredients from the start, to create the best plant-based experience on the planet.” The company believes that their product is the answer to the question, “Do snacks have to be so unhealthy?”
As of the expansion, which includes locations such as Whole Foods Market, Hannaford Earth Fare, and several independent retailers, Hummus Pods are now available in over 2,500 locations across the country.
It’s no secret that Americans, particularly millennials, love to snack. Data from global market research firm Mintel revealed that millennials are more likely than any other generation to snack four or more times a day. What sets millennials apart from other snackers is the type of snacks that they are purchasing. Millennial Marketing, a site that provides insight and commentary on millennial consumer and marketing trends, identified healthy eating as one of the key motivators in snack-purchasing habits.
This is further supported by research from global consumer intelligence firm Maru/Matchbox. A 2016 survey of US consumers ages 18 and older found that millennials are more likely to value products made with “non-GMO” and “locally-sourced” ingredients, two features that The Modern Pod Company stands by. As a whole, more than eight in ten millennials said that they feel more “responsible” or “health conscious” by purchasing products with these labels.
Indeed, millennials do seem to be leading the way in a number of food-related movements, particularly that meat and dairy are falling out of favor over concerns for personal health, the planet, and animals. Only one in five millennials have tried a Big Mac, which many would consider one of the most iconic American foods. Other research shows that 58 percent of Americans are choosing plant-based protein over protein from meat sources.
