Wondering which vegan chicken nuggets reign supreme?
On this episode of EATKINDLY With Me, Suresh Seneviratne puts three vegan chicken nugget brands through the ultimate taste test.
But why opt for plant-based chicken nuggets? “The poultry industry is just appalling,” Seneviratne explains.
Broiler hens are often brought to maturity or “market weight” in around 48 days. As a result, factory-farmed hens suffer from all sorts of health conditions, including chronic joint issues, heart and lung issues. “They’re killed at such a young age. It’s so sad,” Seneviratne says.
“But thankfully we have plant-based variations now and they look, taste, and cook just like original chicken nuggets,” he adds.
But which vegan chicken nuggets taste better?
Vegan Chicken Nuggets: Taste Test
Round 1
In the first round, Seneviratne tries four vegan chicken nuggets: NUGGS—in both spicy and original—MorningStar Farms BBQ Chik’n Nuggets, and The Alpha Nugget. For sauces, he dunks them in ketchup, spicy mustard, and sweet chili sauce.
“That tastes just like a chicken nugget from my childhood,” he says after biting into the former’s original nugget. “The spicy version is just fantastic,” he adds, giving NUGGS first place in this round.
Round 2
In the next round, Seneviratne makes mini nugget casseroles using Daiya’s mozzarella cheese shreds and tomato sauce. (For the complete recipe, see below.) “That is an A+ right there, wow,” he says after trying the casserole containing NUGGS’ vegan chicken nuggets.
“The MorningStar nugget doesn’t have the traditional taste of a nugget. But in the sauce and the cheese, it is just marvelous,” he continues. “I think we have a clear winner here: The Alpha Nugget is my absolute favorite.”
Round 3
And, last but not least, Seneviratne tries the three vegan chicken nugget brands over a mound of waffles. “We’re replicating the whole chicken and waffles thing, you know,” he says.
After trying the MorningStar Farm’s nugget, he said the barbecue flavor didn’t compliment the waffles. “I wouldn’t say that’s my favorite at all,” he says. And the winner? “I would definitely say that the NUGGS nuggets have won this round,” he adds.
