Greggs is expanding its vegan menu. The UK’s biggest bakery chain is launching a Vegan Sausage Breakfast Roll and a Vegan Ham and Cheeze Baguette.
At first, the new vegan options will only be available in a select few stores. A spokesperson for the chain told LIVEKINDLY: “Over the coming weeks we’ll be trialling our delicious Vegan Ham and Cheeze Baguette and Vegan Sausage Breakfast Roll in a very small number of shops, with a wider launch planned for later in the year.”
Like Greggs’ popular Vegan Sausage Roll, launched back in 2019, and the Vegan Steak Bake, launched last year, the new menu items will contain vegan meat produced by Quorn. The baguette will also include “mature Cheddar flavour slices.”
Vegan at Greggs
Since the successful launch of its best-selling Vegan Sausage Roll, Greggs has been steadily expanding its vegan offering. Now the chain offers vegan donuts and a wrap, as well as seasonal options like hot cross buns and mince pies.
In 2019, Greggs’ CEO Roger Whiteside revealed the chain was working on a vegan version of every single menu item. But it takes time.
He told the Evening Standard two years ago: “It took us a couple of years to perfect our vegan sausage rolls, and I can now reveal our staff are working hard in our testing kitchens to make new meat and dairy-free products suitable for vegans. The range will get wider in the future.”
In 2020, he said that vegan chicken was in the works, calling it the “way forward,” although no menu option has appeared with vegan chicken in yet.
He told LBC in 2019: “Obviously, people want a vegan option. If we can succeed in doing that and produce something that tastes just as good as the meat version, then that will sell very successfully. That’s what’s been shown with the vegan sausage roll.”
The new Vegan Sausage Breakfast Roll will be available in select locations in the next few weeks, priced at £1.90, while the Vegan Ham and Cheeze Baguette will be available for £2.95.
