Kristyn Caicedo is just eleven years old and is already changing the lives of many people –and their dogs — in Houston, Texas.
Caicedo is the founder of non-profit organization SavFur Rescue. SavFur creates organic vegan dog treats for the homeless pets of homeless people. “Our mission is to feed a homeless pet for each day of the year,” writes SavFur on its website.
“We understand that the need for companionship is just as important as the need for food and shelter,” the organization continues, later adding that people who have pets are more likely to be healthy, happy, and feel more involved in the world.
Between five and ten percent of homeless people have pets, SavFur says. There are roughly 3,605 homeless in Houston alone, according to the Coalition for the Homeless, and approximately 180 to 360 homeless pets in the city.
“We want to help change the current experiences of homelessness and enhance the process of their lives returning to normalcy,” SavFur states.
Caicedo sells her organic, plant-based, and homemade pet treats online. Purchasing a treat bag ensures a homeless pet eats. Buying two means the animal also gets a treat.
SavFur’s Bark Bites contain organic pumpkin, peanut butter, and carrot. According to the non-profit, it offers health benefits to hungry hounds as it is a good source of fiber and vitamin A, aiding digestion and helping tooth health.
Its PawTato Chips are made with organic sweet potato and are said to improve digestive health, vision, and muscle strength. Sweet potatoes are high in dietary fiber and contain vitamin B6, vitamin C, and manganese. They are also low in fat.
In honor of the festive season, the 11-year-old entrepreneur is selling boxes of Christmas cookies for dogs, made with cinnamon, peanut butter, pumpkin, carrot, flaxseed, and parsley.
All of SavFur’s snacks are free from harmful and allergenic ingredients like dairy, meat wheat, soy, corn, gluten, and preservatives.
SavFur’s dog treats can be purchased online. Even if you don’t own a pet, you can still donate a treat bag to an animal in need for $10.
