Rainforest hero Kyle Hughes has been singled out by the Rainforest Trust recently in the ‘Supporter Spotlight’ series on their blog. The 11 year old environment enthusiast has already helped to save a massive 2,500 of rainforest in the last 3 years. His interest in using his time to help others started when his grandfather bought him the Christmas present of a goat that was donated to an African family less fortunate than Hughes. Since then his interest in charity has developed and he’s particularly passionate about saving the habitats of animals.
Kyle’s parents, Rob and Rebecca, helped him search for the perfect charity to sponsor so that his money was being used in the best way possible. The Rainforest Trust caught their attention thanks to the work they do in Peru, where they try and save the rainforest while working with local people.
Kyle was inspired to give a talk to his cub scout pack and collected donations for the cause. Back home in Texas, with the help of his scout pack Kyle tries to make a difference locally. The group pick help to try and restore the Blackland Prairie habitat by picking up litter in local rivers.
When he was just seven years old, Kyle made a mini documentary trying to encourage other people to be as passionate as him about the environment and encourage them to be more conscious of the impact their actions have on the world around them.
The eleven year old’s actions help to undo some of the damage that large companies and agriculture inflict on the environment. Large corporations such as McDonalds have been known to destroy rainforests in pursuit of more land and grazing animals are one of the biggest causes of the destruction of natural habitats. The animal agricultural industries demands for land is much higher than the environment can naturally cope with and repair.
When asked why he was so keen to preserve rainforests particularly Kyle said ‘the rainforest is one of the best producers of oxygen because it has lots of trees and plants which turn carbon dioxide into oxygen… so we should protect them.’
Kyle is just one of the many young people who are taking an interest in protecting the environment, and joins other inspirational people such as Genesis Butler. The young environmentalist has even asked for another donation to the Rainforest Trust from Santa this year which we’re sure the Rainforest Trust will be really grateful for.
